Get TESOL Certified & Teach Your Way Around the World

Getting Certified in TESOL

Teach Your Way Around The World ™

Becoming TESOL certified as you enter the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages {TESOL}is not only a good idea, but it's also an investment that pays immediate and lasting benefits.

While there are places around the world that will accept a native-English speaking teacher without an accredited TESOL Certificate, most employers of TESOL teachers require this as a minimum requisite.  You can read more about this in our post:  Do I really need to get TESOL certified?

There are many clear reasons why getting TESOL certified is the first step you take before you start teaching your way around the world.  More than likely, your principle reason is getting a job overseas.  So, let's start from there.

  1. You'll feel prepared to teach non-native English speakers. {Knowing a language is not the same as knowing how to teach it}
  2. You'll feel competent in teaching all aspects of TESOL. {Learning a language is more than vocabulary and grammar}
  3. You'll be able to choose from a wider variety of TESOL job opportunities. {There are hundreds of openings each day}
  4. You'll be able to teach where having a TESOL Certificate is the law.  {Many require this in exchange for a work visa}
  5. You'll be on par with thousands of other TESOL Certified teachers. {Education and experience count in this field too}

Getting Certified to Teach Anywhere in the World

It used to be that being a native speaker with a pulse was all you needed to find a job teaching English in many parts of the world.  While unqualified native English speakers used to populate the ranks of TESOL teachers, this is no longer the case.

In most developed countries, a TESOL Certificate is required.  Even in the developing world, schools are far more interested in hiring someone who has had formal training than someone who hasn't.  They are investing resources in hiring teachers, managing teachers, and they want that investment to pay off.

It would also seem that being a native English speaker would be enough to be able to successfully teach English.  However, knowing something does not always equate to being able to teach something.  {just ask yourself if someone in your life who knew how to do something was unable to teach you successfully}.

There is far more to teaching language than fluency in that language.  At the macro level,  are the four skills - speaking, listening, reading, or writing.  At the micro level, there are other skills - pronunciation, grammar, culture, or learning strategies.  Woven in and among both levels are even more skills - giving clear instructions, managing group interactions, lesson planning, essential teaching skills, and much more.

There are a ton of jobs for people who want to teach English to non-native speakers.  Getting certified is the first step.  The global demand for English language teachers shows no signs of slowing down.

Certainly there are plenty of options out there: TESOL Trainers, Inc. in Santa Fe, New Mexico offers on-going TESOL Certificate courses through World Learning's SIT Graduate Institute, one of the most respected providers of language teacher training in the world.
